Schmelzer to extend Dortmund stay

Germany international Marcel Schmelzer is set to extend his contract at Borussia Dortmund, kicker has reported.

Schmelzer, 24, is set to sign a contract until 2016, with his current deal ending prior to the 2014 World Cup.

“Marcel has become an important cornerstone for us,” Dortmund general manager Michael Zorc said. “He has stepped up tactically and improved in one-on-one situations. He is extremely important for the team.”

Schmelzer has also expressed his desire to prolong his stay with the German champions, and reports say he is likely to put pen to paper on the new deal within the next few days.

It has been a busy few days for Dortmund legend Zorc in the transfer market as the players spend the winter break at a training camp in Marbella.

On Sunday, the club announced the departure of Ivan Perisic to Wolfsburg. Only a couple of hours later, both centre-back Neven Subotic and defensive midfielder Sven Bender signed new contracts, tying them to the club until 2016 and 2017 respectively.

But there is more work to be done for Zorc, who, according to kicker, will now set to work on extending Kevin Grosskreutz’s stay.

Earlier, it was reported that skipper Sebastian Kehl could also renew his deal, with his current contract expiring at the end of the season.

However, it seems more than likely that the saga of Robert Lewandowski’s contract will not be concluded soon.

The in-demand Poland international is reported to have turned down an offer and now appears likely to leave the club in the summer.
