Wolves make approach for Saunders

Wolverhampton Wanderers are homing in on former Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders as a possible successor to Stale Solbakken, who was sacked on Saturday.

Doncaster have revealed they received an approach from Molineux on Sunday morning and have reluctantly granted permission for talks to take place.

A statement from Doncaster read: "The board will not stand in the way of Dean but will try to keep him at Rovers. Dean has been given permission to speak to Wolves and he is meeting them today."

Wolves' first venture with a foreign manager was an abject failure, culminating on Saturday when they added an FA Cup third-round exit at non-League Luton to a series of utterly inept Championship performances.

They have now lost four matches in a row and were widely criticised last year for sacking Mick McCarthy less than a fortnight after the closure of the January transfer window.

Owner Steve Morgan and his board seem unwilling to make the same mistake now and appear ready to make a quick appointment.

The chairman is a lifelong Liverpool supporter and knows Saunders from when the 75-times-capped Wales international played around 50 games while at Anfield in the early 1990s.

Since his extensive playing career ended, the 48-year-old has coached at Bradford City, Blackburn, Newcastle and with Wales, the latter as assistant boss.

He has since managed Wrexham and Doncaster, taking over at the Yorkshire club in September, 2011, in succession to Wolverhampton-born Sean O'Driscoll, who is currently speaking to Barnsley but considered to be another contender for the Molineux post.

With immaculate timing, Saunders led Doncaster to joint leadership of League One with Saturday's home victory over Colchester.

Paul Ince, another man with considerable Merseyside connections, is believed to be highly interested in the vacancy, while Owen Coyle fits into the same category.

There is also some support for the return of Liverpudlian Dave Jones, who was at the Wolves helm from 2001 to 2004.

Kevin Thelwell, recently promoted to head of football development at Molineux, has been put in temporary charge of playing matters.
