Wolfsburg hope to offload fringe players

New Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs has the toughest job in German football as he sets about trying to offload several fringe players during the winter transfer period.

During the 2011-12 season, then Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath splashed out some €27 million on eight new players and added another eight to the Wolves squad last summer. The club's official homepage currently lists 35 squad members.

Wolfsburg, currently ranked 15th in the Bundesliga, want to give their squad a facelift during the winter transfer period.

It seems certain that former Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Marco Russ, 27, is to return to his old club. Russ has not played a minute of Bundesliga football this season and is set to sign a loan deal, but this will only be the start into a hectic transfer period for Wolfsburg.

Former Liverpool centre-back Sotirios Kyrgiakos could be the next player to leave the 2009 Bundesliga champions. The 33-year-old has not joined the training camp in Belek, Turkey and is currently looking for a new club.

Another centre-back, Emanuel Pogatetz, 29, has been linked with Hoffenheim, who will need to reinforce their defence after conceding 41 goals in the first half of the season.

Former Germany international Christian Trasch, 25, could also return to his old club, Stuttgart, kicker reports.

Switzerland left-back Ricardo Rodriguez, 20, has been linked with a move to Dinamo Kiev. He arrived at Wolfsburg in January 2012 for €7.5 million.

Portugese midfielder Vierinha, 26, was signed from PAOK Saloniki for a reported fee of €4 million in January 2012 and was linked with a return to PAOK in December. However, the transfer now seems off the table as Vierinha's agent Paul Koutsoliakos told kicker: “The player wants to and will stay in Wolfsburg”.

New Wolfsburg head coach Dieter Hecking has a pragmatic approach to it all, as he told kicker: “I have a totally open mind. One or two can certainly raise their hopes.”
A total of 30 players flew out to the training camp in Turkey on Thursday.
