Heskey keen to extend A-League stay

Newcastle Jets striker Emile Heskey is hoping to sign a new deal with the A-League club this month, insisting he has been impressed by the quality of Australian football.

Heskey, 34, joined the Jets on a one-year deal in September and has scored seven goals from the opening 14 games.

The former England international is likely to be offered an extension to his contract and he is hopeful of reaching an agreement shortly, admitting it was an easy decision to move to Australia.

"It will be interesting to stay, that's something I've got to sit down with the owners and the CEO and the manager to see what their plans are," Heskey said. "I think in January that's what they plan on doing [extending his contract] so we will see where it goes from there.

"Being part of [the league is great]. You've got Del Piero and players know about the league. The league is growing.

"I had an open mind about where I was going to go. So once the CEO Robbie [Middleby] and [Hunter Sports Group CEO] Troy [Palmer] came out and spoke to me, it was something I really had to think about.

"I spoke to them about it, I spoke to Robbie Fowler about it, I spoke to Bridgey [Michael Bridges] about it obviously. I had already spoken to Dwight years before about when he came over and he absolutely loved it, so it was something I really had to think about."
