Pulis pondering Olsson swoop

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis is considering another move for Martin Olsson - after failing to sign the Sweden international in the summer.

Pulis has been a long-time admirer of the Blackburn Rovers left-back, but was put off by the Championship club's £8 million demands for the defender earlier this year.

Pulis would like to bring in two new players at the Britannia Stadium and has made signing a specialist left-back his priority, especially after releasing veteran Danny Higginbotham.

He has been told he will have to sell players to raise money for any incoming transfers, with fringe players like Wilson Palacios and Matthew Upson the most likely to be allowed to move on.

Stoke would also reluctantly listen to offers for Cameron Jerome, who has attracted a host of interest from Championship clubs, including Leeds United.

Pulis will face competition from Sunderland for Olsson. Martin O'Neill has sent scouts to check on the form of the 24-year-old in recent weeks and is mulling over whether to make an official move.

A source close to Olsson said: "Sunderland have an interest and have watched him a few times recently and Stoke are also interested.

"It depends upon what Blackburn want to do. He is in the team at the moment and there has been another change of manager. Stoke were put off in the summer by the high valuation."

Pulis has set his sights on challenging for a Europa League place in the second half of the Premier League season and feels his side will benefit from some new faces.

He is also mindful of the fact that he failed to do any business at this stage a year ago and his side fell away during the second half of last season.

"The squad needs some fresh blood, but we have to generate the money by moving people on and so we will have to wheel and deal. If we can't do that, then we'll go with the players we have," he said.
