Villas-Boas happy with options

Andre Villas-Boas has said it is “extremely unlikely” that Tottenham Hotspur will make any signings in January, even in the event of forward Emmanuel Adebayor going to the African Cup of Nations with Togo.

Despite a few lingering concerns about their attack and even being linked with the likes of Wesley Sneijder, the Spurs manager insisted after his team’s 3-1 win over Reading that he was content with his side.

“I’ve told you that we are pretty happy." he said. "We have different kinds of players in different positions. We are solid. We have different options. It doesn’t mean we don’t do anything but I would say it is extremely unlikely we will do anything in January.”

However, Villas-Boas did reveal to the Daily Mirror that Spurs will continue to monitor the progress of young Brazilian strike duo Willian of Shakhtar Donetsk and Leandro Damiao.

"We got in touch with Willian [in the summer] and he is one of the players that interests us," he said. "I like his style, but we could not reach the value Shakhtar were asking. It does not mean we won't try again.

"Shakhtar are a difficult club to negotiate with as they do not need the money
and can keep their players.

"For Damiao, he had a spectacular Olympics. We follow the best players and youngsters. Leandro fits this profile. He has had injuries after London 2012, but he is a player that is always on our list."

It is, however, still unknown whether Adebayor will travel to South Africa with Togo. The forward has been involved in an ongoing pay dispute over his federation but there is now fresh expectation the matter will be resolved before the tournament starts on January 19.

“It’s a vulnerable situation” Villas-Boas said. “Anything can happen. I’ve told you the player can still go. At the moment, we understand there is still that possibility and we still have to be aware of it.

“It was always his choice because I’m not going to put myself in a situation where I block a player from a tournament like that.

“We have left it to the player to decide. If the player wants to go, we fully respect the African Nations. We have to ensure we continue this level of form. If the player wants to go, he goes. If the player wants to stay, he stays.”
