Heynckes: Trophy drought not acceptable

Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes has challenged his side to win a trophy this season and says the fact they have not picked up silverware in two years is not acceptable.

• Schaaf: Are three competitions too much for Dortmund?

Bayern lost out to Borussia Dortmund twice domestically last season and fell to Chelsea in the final of the Champions League on home soil. Now, the runaway Bundesliga leaders are eager to win a trophy again, and have all chances in the three major competitions: they face Dortmund in a repeat of the 2012 cup final in February and Arsenal in Europe's last-16.

"Bayern failed to win a trophy for two years," Heynckes told the club's website. "That's not acceptable in the light of the club's ambitions and expectations. It's been a wake-up call to everyone at the club. We're now all working even more attentively, we're even more alert, professional and focused."

Over the summer the club spent some €70 million on new players, adding new depth to the squad and also sacked general manager Christian Nerlinger to bring in Matthias Sammer.

"It's a meeting between two equals, and it'll be a classic cup fight," Heynckes said about the quarter-final of the German cup. "I hope we end up with our noses in front," he added. A win over Dortmund would not only mean semi-finals but also beating an opponent Bayern have not beaten in the last six games.

The cup game is in between Bayern's two-legged Champions League clash with Arsenal. "It's the Champions League," Heynckes said. "Arsenal boast one of the richest traditions in England. They've always played attractive attacking football, and they've ended up there or thereabouts at the top of the table in England for years. But given our targets, we're definitely capable of making the next round."

During the first half of the Bundesliga season Bayern have picked up 42 points and lead the league by a nine-point margin.

"I'm genuinely thrilled and delighted at the progress made by my team. It's been an exceptionally good first half of the season," Heynckes added.

"I'm really impressed with the spirit in this team. The team must carry this hunger and yearning through into the New Year. We have to keep it up. I won't deviate from our chosen course one single millimeter."
