Augsburg appoint Reuter

Former Germany international and 1990 World Cup-winner Stefan Reuter has been appointed FC Augsburg general manager, becoming the club's ninth in 12 years.

One day before Christmas, Augsburg sacked general manager Jurgen Rollmann due to "irreconcilable differences about the future sporting development" after only ten weeks in charge of the club. Rollmann had taken over from Andreas Rettig's successor Manfred Paula in October but since then lost all backing at the club.

On Thursday, the side currently ranked 17th in the Bundesliga announced the appointment of the 46-year-old Reuter, who won titles with Germany, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich during a glittering playing career.

"We are pleased to have won over an absolute expert for FC Augsburg," president Walther Seinsch said. "At short notice he committed to the FAC as he saw the club's potential."

The 1997 Champions League winner signed a contract until 2015 and claimed he wants to form "a solid Bundesliga club", adding: "I am looking forward to my new task in Augsburg, as I am convinced we can reach the goals we've set."

The job is Reuter's third appointment as general manager; after a short period in Dortmund, he spent three unsuccessful years at 1860 Munich.
