Tottenham's Wembley challenge

Cardiff beat title rivals Palace to go clear

Cardiff extended their lead at the top of the Championship to five points after substitute Aron Gunnarsson nodded home the winning goal in a 2-1 win against title rivals Crystal Palace.

An action-packed first half was book-ended by two goals 40 minutes apart, Mike Jedinak stunning the sell-out crowd at Cardiff City Stadium with the opener before Craig Noone equalised late in the period.

Third-placed Hull were unable to provide any kind of celebration on their 10th anniversary since moving into the KC Stadium following a goalless draw with fellow promotion chasers Leicester.

Lukas Jutkiewicz struck the game's solitary goal midway through the second half as Middlesbrough bounced back from Saturday's defeat at Leeds to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive with a 1-0 victory against Blackburn.

Peterborough made it three wins on the bounce as Wolves joined Cardiff and Bolton on the growing list of recent sides slayed by resurgent Posh.

Goals from Lee Tomlin, Tommy Rowe and Dwight Gayle did the damage as Darren Ferguson's side received the perfect Christmas present by lifting themselves off the foot of the table with a 3-0 victory.

Curtis Davies settled a thrilling contest in Birmingham's favour against fellow strugglers Barnsley with a 2-1 victory at Oakwell. Davies was on target in each half, sandwiching an equaliser from Jonathan Greening, but the loss was harsh on Barnsley, who were the better side.

Mamady Sidibe scored his first Sheffield Wednesday goal as Dave Jones' side secured a third consecutive win with a 1-0 triumph at out-of-form Bolton.

Charlie Austin scored his 23rd goal of the season to set Burnley on their way to a first victory in six Championship matches as Derby were beaten 2-0 at Turf Moor.

Austin struck five minutes before half-time, turning the ball into the net after the visitors failed to deal with Kieran Trippier's cross, before more poor defending enabled Michael Duff to nod home.

Loan stars DJ Campbell, who missed an early penalty, and Daryl Murphy fired Ipswich to a 2-1 victory at free-falling Charlton. Danny Haynes pulled one back from the spot for Charlton but they could not avoid crashing to a third straight defeat.

Substitute Nathan Delfouneso struck deep in stoppage time for Blackpool to deny Huddersfield a first win in eight games as an entertaining Championship clash finished 1-1 at the John Smith's Stadium.

Anthony Gerrard's first goal for the club looked to have ended Huddersfield's barren run but the Seasiders were excellent value for at least a point.

In the early kick-off Billy Sharp inspired Nottingham Forest to come from a goal down to beat Leeds 4-2 at the City Ground.

Paul Green fired Leeds into an early lead after Luciano Becchio had headed down a Jerome Thomas cross. But Sharp won a penalty when Tom Lees brought him down and converted it to draw Forest level just before the break.

Sharp fired Forest ahead early in the second half after Dexter Blackstock's header sent him clear and Rodolph Austin turned Elliott Ward's cut back into his own net.

Blackstock made it three goals in seven minutes when he climbed to head home Andy Reid's cross for 4-1. Substitute Davide Somma pulled a goal back for Leeds in the last minute.
