Taarabt Morocco omission boosts QPR

Queens Park Rangers star Adel Taarabt will be available to continue spearheading his club's battle for Premier League survival after being left out of Morocco's 24-man African Nations Cup squad.

• Moonda: Nations Cup draws near

Taarabt, 23, has been in sparkling form for the Rs recently and had expressed his hope for a call-up from coach Rachid Taoussi for the continental finals, which take place in South Africa next month.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp had been preparing to be without one of his star players for almost a month, but he former Lens and Tottenham playmaker was omitted from Morocco's squad, along with Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh.

Taarabt said last week that being left out would be "painful" but he vowed to be "the biggest Morocco supporter".

There was better luck for fellow Premier League players Karim El Ahmadi of Aston Villa and Oussama Assaidi of Liverpool, who were both called up.

Morocco squad for the 2013 African Nations Cup:

Goalkeepers: Khalid Askri, Nadir Lamyaghri, Ana Znaiti

Defenders: Younes Belakhdar, Abderahim Achchakir, Zakaria Bergdich, Abdelhamid El Kaoutari, Mehdi Benatia, Issam El Adoua, Ahmed Kantari

Midfielders: Adil Hermach, Karim El Ahmadi, Younes Belhanda, Mehdi Namli, Kamel Chafni, Chakhir Belghazouani, Hamza Hafidi

Forwards: Oussama Assaidi, Nordin Amrabat, Abderazzak Hamdallah, Abdelaziz Barrada, Youssef El Arabi, Mounir El Hamdaoui, Youssef Kaddioui
