Redknapp slams overpaid players

Harry Redknapp has issued a scathing attack on members of his Queens Park Rangers squad he feels are paid too much money.

Redknapp watched on as his side were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a late Shola Ameobi strike. Asked if he intends to add to his squad in January, Redknapp revealed he is reluctant to spend money.

"I don't want to spend their money really," he said, "I've got to be honest with you, there's an awful lot of players at this club that earn far too much money for what they are. For their amount of ability and what they give the club. Not all of them but an awful lot of them.

"I don't really want to see the owners have their pants taken down anymore than what they have in the past. There are a lot of agents making an awful lot of money out of them. I fined a player last week and he was earning more than anybody was at Tottenham."

Drawing comparisons with opponents Newcastle, Redknapp stated his belief that at present, QPR are spending considerably more than would seem reasonable for a club of their stature.

"They've got a stadium that holds 18,000 people," he added. "You shouldn't be paying massive wages when you've got 18,000 people at the football club should you? This club [Newcastle] holds 55,000. I bet most of their players won't be anywhere near the wages they [QPR players] are earning."

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth manager also confirmed that the club had fined Portuguese defender Jose Bosingwa for a breach of club discipline - after he refused to sit on the bench for the game against Fulham last week.

"He didn't like being on the bench," Redknapp said. "He didn't want to be on the bench, he didn't feel he should be a substitute so he went home. He's been fined two weeks' wages. He's been fined £130,000, which is not too bad for two weeks' wages is it?

"I don't know [how we'll handle him], we'll find out in January."

QPR currently find themselves in 19th place and entertain West Bromwich Albion at Loftus Road on Boxing Day, before Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool travel south to complete their Christmas schedule.
