Heskey ends drought, Victory win derby

Emile Heskey won the battle of the A-League's marquee players against Alessandro Del Piero as Newcastle Jets beat Sydney FC 2-1 at the Hunter Stadium.

Former England striker Heskey scored in the 26th minute to put the Jets 2-0 up after Craig Goodwin had opened the scoring in the 13th minute. It was Heskey's first goal in six games.

Yairo Yau pulled one back just after the half-hour mark, but Sydney, with Italian veteran Del Piero back in the starting line-up after a recent injury, could not find a leveller and stayed bottom of the table.

Central Coast Mariners moved two points clear at the top of the standings, despite conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Wellington Phoenix.

Daniel McBreen put the visitors in front on the stroke of half-time, but Dani Sanchez made it 1-1 five minutes from time.

Melbourne Victory moved up to third as a 90th-minute winner from Archie Thompson earned them a 2-1 win at Melbourne Heart.

Marco Rojas put Melbourne ahead in the 67th minute only for Fred to equaliser in the 81st minute, but veteran striker Thompson had the final say.
