Jozy Altidore pays tribute to victims

U.S. striker Jozy Altidore paid tribute Friday to the 26 victims of the Connecticut school tragedy by wearing their names on his cleats during a game for his Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.

Altidore scrawled the names in black ink across his yellow cleats, plus wore a black band across one of his arms to represent mourning. The 20 students and six teachers at a school in Newtown, Conn., were killed Dec. 14.

Altidore said he made the gesture "to show I'm thinking of everyone in Newtown and back home."

He plans on other tributes in the weeks ahead, and has reached out to local soccer clubs and community leaders to offer assistance and support. He says he and his foundation will "help the community in any way we can on its road to recovery."

FC Twente beat AZ Alkmaar 3-0 to go three points clear at the top of the Eredivisie on a second-half brace from Nacer Chadli. AZ remained in 12th place.

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson also wore the victims' names on his cleats Monday night.

Information from The Associated Press and Press Association was used in this report.
