Ad Utd must learn from drubbing: Kosmina

Adelaide United coach John Kosmina had a blunt message for his charges after they leaked six goals on Friday night against Western Sydney: success doesn't come so easy.

Adelaide entered round 12 of the A-League in fine form, one point behind ladder leaders Central Coast and boasting four wins from their past five matches.

It unravelled in spectacular fashion as the Wanderers punished some uncharacteristically sloppy defending from the Reds.

Kosmina can deliver a spray with the best of them and the veteran coach had every reason to be livid, but he felt it was the wrong time for vitriol.

"Nothing needs to be said at the moment because they'll be smarting. This is when it's time for a bit of introspection," Kosmina said.

"They don't need to have their heads filled with any philosophy at the moment. They need to soak it up themselves.

"Last week against Wellington we played in second gear, it almost happened too easily.

"It's not complacency but it's very hard when things are flowing that well to be prepared for the alternative and that's what we got today.

"It will wake a few people up. Make them realise that success doesn't come so easy. Not without a little bit of rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty."

Defender Nigel Boogaard apologised to fans after the club's worst result since November 2011 when Brisbane Roar thumped them 7-1.

Kosmina will opt against wholesale changes despite having the luxury of a handful of fit-again players to promote.

"We've got enough blokes coming back from injury now to maybe freshen things up," he said.

"That's not to say we're going to make changes for the sake of it. Everyone deserves a second chance. There was enough good out of tonight even in the second half."

Kosmina lamented three "terrible" goals in particular that took the game away from the visitors when they only trailed 1-0.

"We didn't win a header in the first half. We let the ball bounce, we didn't attack the ball. They are just basic things of football," he said.

"...Don't think I'm not disappointed. We are disappointed, I hate losing. But what do you do?

"How many shots did they have on goal, seven, eight?

"And six of them went in. Look at the desperation they showed at the other end to block shots."
