Sao Paulo sign incarcerated Breno

Sao Paulo have signed Bayern Munich defender Breno, despite the fact he is currently serving a prison sentence for arson.

Breno has signed up, despite being locked up

Breno, 23, had set fire to his Munich home in October 2011 under the influence of alcohol and was sentenced to a three-year-and-nine-month imprisonment. However, on Thursday, his former club Sao Paulo announced they had signed him until October 7, 2015, with the contract valid upon his release.

A statement on the club’s website said Sao Paulo wanted to give the player “security, stability and most of all a perspective”.

During his trial a psychiatrist explained that Breno had suffered from a depression, a condition which had worsened during the eight months ahead of the arson.

However, recently his lawyer Steffen Ufer was quoted by Munich’s Abendzeitung as saying that Breno’s condition has steadily improved over the past few months and that the prosecution had allowed the player to get treatment at Bayern’s medical office.

Breno was transferred from Sao Paulo to Munich in January 2008, with the transfer fee rumoured to be as high as €12 million.  However, in four years, Breno played only 21 Bundesliga games for Bayern and tore his cruciate ligaments during a loan stint with FC Nurnberg.
