Ribery misses Dortmund cup clash

Franck Ribery will miss February's German Cup clash between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund after being handed a two-game suspension following his sending-off in the 2-0 win against Augsburg.

Ribery, 29, was sent off after being adjudged to have slapped Augsburg's Ja-Cheol Koo in the face during the opening minutes of the second half of Tuesday's cup match.

But the decision infuriated Bayern officials, with president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and general manger Matthias Sammer calling for the red card to be overturned.

"Personally, I absolutely don't accept that," Sammer said after the punishment was upheld by the German FA. "That the ref showed a catastrophic performance that day was completely ignored, as was the fact that Koo did the same thing [and was given a yellow card]."

Munich now will be without the France international for the Dortmund clash, a repeat of the 2012 cup final.

"This hurts," Rummenigge said. "He might have been the best player of the first half of this season - but that will be no excuse for us."

Meanwhile, Bastian Schweinsteiger has become the latest Bayern star to ask coach Jupp Heynckes to extend his contract.

Heynckes' current deal expires at the end of the season, and he is due to hold talks over a new contract with the Bundesliga leaders in March. "Jupp Heynckes is the decisive factor for our success," Schweinsteiger told Bild. "The public does not appreciate his work enough. I would appreciate it if he stays for another year."
