Khedira: Players 'unworthy' of Real Madrid

Sami Khedira has admitted that Real Madrid's start to the season has not been up to the standards of the club, but the Champions League provides them with a route to redemption.

•  Blog: Mourinho eyes redemption

With Barcelona currently 13 points clear of Jose Mourinho's side in the Primera Division standings, the German international told Sport Bild that Madrid's campaign had yet to really get going.

"Our season is not worthy of a club like Real Madrid," Khedira said. "We cannot be content with how we have played so far. We have not found our rhythm since the start."

The former Stuttgart midfielder, 25, said that Madrid's performances - particularly away from home - had just not been good enough.

"There has never been a period when we have been doing well away from home," he said. "That is where we have lost lots of points. That cannot be, so we cannot be satisfied."

After Mourinho admitted last weekend that that it was unlikely Barca could be caught in La Liga, Khedira said there was a clear focus now on winning the club's tenth European Cup trophy.

"At Madrid we have set a very clear goal," he said. "That is to win the Champions League."

Madrid enter Thursday's last 16 draw as second seeds after qualifying behind Borussia Dortmund in Group D. Khedira said that Jurgen Klopp's side had shown with their performances so far that they were contenders for this season's trophy.

"Dortmund have arrived back in European football," he said. "They can compete and win the trophy. Klopp is a phenomenal coach and he has the perfect players for his system."
