Eriksen, 20, has regularly been linked with a move away from Ajax having impressed for the Eredivisie champions in recent seasons.

Vertonghen played alongside the Denmark midfielder before signing at White Hart Lane in the summer and he has backed Eriksen to make an impression in the Premier League.

"Technically he's one of the best players I've played with," Vertonghen said in the Telegraph. "He's left and right footed. He's always fit. Since he was 17-18 he’s played every game for Ajax and has never been injured.

"When he gains a little more physical strength he can play in every team. I don't want to talk for him but he's a good player and I think a good player can play here."

Vertonghen opened his goalscoring account for Tottenham on Sunday as his strike sealed a 1-0 win over Swansea City to see Spurs fourth in the table.

Reflecting on the result, he said: "That was my first goal in the Premier League so I was happy. We needed to win our two home games [against Swansea and Stoke]. This was the first one. It's important to enter Christmas feeling good."
