Bin Hammam given lifetime ban by FIFA

Mohamed Bin Hammam has resigned as a member of the FIFA Executive Committee and as Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president after being banned from football for life, FIFA has announced.

Football's world governing body revealed on Monday that the 63-year-old Qatari resigned from all of his positions in football and has been banned for life by FIFA's new adjudicatory chamber of the ethics committee, due to his "conflicts of interest'' while president of the AFC.

It is the second time FIFA has placed a lifelong ban on Hammam after it found him guilty of paying bribes at a Caribbean Football Union meeting in Trinidad and Tobago in 2011. However, the ban was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July due to insufficient evidence.

FIFA said in a statement: "Mr Mohamed Bin Hammam, FIFA executive committee member and AFC president, has resigned from all his positions in football with immediate effect and will never be active in organised football again. This results from a resignation letter of Mr Bin Hammam addressed to FIFA and AFC dated December 15, 2012.

"In view of the fact that under the new FIFA code of ethics, the FIFA ethics committee remains competent to render a decision even if a person resigns, the adjudicatory chamber decided to ban Mohamed Bin Hammam from all football-related activity for life."
