Hummels shrugs off Barca interest

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has shrugged off reports that Barcelona are interested in signing him.

The two-time Bundesliga champion, 24, has impressed a lot of Europe’s top clubs with his assured displays for Dortmund and Germany. He is the only outfield player in the Bundesliga to go through 2012 without receiving a yellow card.

But despite interest from Barca, Hummels, who is contracted to Dortmund until 2017, is not in a hurry to depart the Westfalenstadion, and insists if he does it must be right for the club as well as for him.

“That news doesn’t trigger anything in me,” he told kicker. “I think it is cool. But it is not like I am desperate to find out, if there is any truth behind the news. I read it, and 10 minutes later it has exited my thoughts.

“If another club wants me and I am ready for a move then Dortmund is due some good money. The other club would have to suitably compensate Dortmund, so a departure would cause no strife.”

Dortmund are much improved in the Champions League this season and qualified for the knockout stages ahead of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax. In the Bundesliga it is a different story and Jurgen Klopps’s side are struggling to defend their crown against Bayern Munich, something that doesn’t sit comfortably with Hummels.

“I’d rather have 10 more points in the league and, if not possible otherwise, to have exited the Champions League,” he said. “The most important thing to me is to not give away any more games in the league.

“Our problem is that sometimes we are too aware of our qualities. Take the Wolfsburg game last week. We take the lead and dominate the opponent during the first 30 minutes, but we don’t develop the will to score the second or third goal. As if we subconsciously try and save energy. We don’t need to do that.”

Despite Dortmund’s unfavourable position in the Bundesliga, Hummels is targeting closing the gap on Bayern and reaching the last eight of the Champions League.

“I want to finish the league on second,” he said. “2012 will most certainly go into my history as one of the best years of my life. I would love to lift some silverware at the end of the season.” And if Dortmund were to not win a title we should at least finish the league second and reach the Champions League quarter finals.”
