Pardew admits feeling pressure

Alan Pardew believes he has been subjected to the same level of pressure that has been afforded to Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez and Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini.

• Blog: How does Pardew stack up?

Newcastle have endured a difficult second full season under Pardew and currently find themselves hovering dangerously above the relegation zone - a stark contrast to their fifth-place finish last season. As well as poor form, injuries, suspensions, and the demand of the Europa League have all added to the 51-year-olds's woes - with Pardew admitting Newcastle's upcoming opponents do little to relieve the pressure

"There has been pressure on me," he told the Chronicle. "The spotlight is on them [Chelsea and Manchester City] because they are bigger clubs. My view of this is that I have to look at the bigger picture at this club. But I must not take my eye off the immediate problem. And that's immediate results."

"We find ourselves in a position in the league where we have three of the top four clubs in the next four matches. It makes it even more difficult. But that is a challenge that we must accept head-on and try to get across the line. By no means, don't think I am not affected by the results, because I am.

"Nothing is hurting me more at the minute than losing games. It isn't money, stability or happiness – it is winning."

In what has undoubtedly been the most difficult period of Pardew's two years in charge at the club the former West Ham United boss admitted he is still looking for answers as to why the club are suffering.

"There are a lot of things that are linked together," he said. "You have momentum, and I can honestly say that the players have probably worked harder in this period than at any time since I have been at the football club. What you can't be is over-analytical and put different messages in players' heads. When you are winning, you just roll in and everybody is in good form.

"You don't have to find many answers. We have to find a lot of answers. Like 'Why isn't Jonas playing as well?' or 'Why isn't Tiote producing the effectiveness of last year?'"

Pardew feels that Tiote is a fine example of how players can be affected by a poor run.

"Sometimes when you have defeats some things do suffer an overreaction," he said. "Tiote is an example. He made three errors in the Fulham game [a 2-1 defeat at Craven Cottage]. Two of them nearly cost us goals, but the rest of his game he is right on it. The stats suggest that, he's had something like 72 passes and 87% completion.

"You know he isn't that far away. When you are under pressure you make errors. And we want that win to put it all right."
