Postecoglou fan of All-Stars concept

Having coached against Manchester United before, Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou knows the scale of what the A-League All-Stars will be up against in July.

Postecoglou is among the frontrunners to be given the job of coaching an A-League team selected by fans to take on the English giants.

The two-time A-League championship-winning coach knows what to expect, having led NSL side South Melbourne at the Club World Championship in Brazil in 2000.

South were beaten 2-0 by United in their group match at the Maracana Stadium - falling to two Quinton Fortune goals as they went winless through the tournament.

Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop said this week details were yet to be finalised of how the coach would be selected.

"It would be a unique exercise to do that, but I've coached against Man U before. Maybe it's time to give somebody else a go," Postecoglou joked.

"If not involved, I'll be a very interested observer because it will be a cracking game."

He is particularly pleased with the timing of the match at Sydney's ANZ Stadium - just a few weeks before the start of the English Premier League rather than a post-season exercise for a jaded team.

"It's great they're coming out and I think the timing of when they're coming out is great," Postecoglou said.

"I've never been a fan of friendly games at the end of seasons for European clubs.

"But they're coming here July 20. The Premier League starts just after that, so they'll take it seriously."
