Lyon, PSG set for table-topping showdown

Paris St Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi is ready to put in another destructive performance on Sunday as the capital club look to move to the top of Ligue 1 with victory over current leaders Lyon.

A poor run of one win in five matches saw PSG surrender top spot to their rivals, but they have responded in style with successive 4-0 victories, the latest coming on Tuesday night when Carlo Ancelotti's men romped to victory at in-form Valenciennes.

The win, which came thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's hat-trick and a goal from Ezequiel Lavezzi, moved Carlo Ancelotti's side within two points of Lyon, whom they entertain at the Parc des Princes.

And Matuidi warned the league leaders that his team-mates are full of confidence ahead of the top-two showdown.

"Everyone's making an effort and the results are following,'' the midfielder told PSG's website. On Tuesday we won in style against in-form opponents, and we need to keep up the good work. We'll do our best to deliver the same kind of performance on Sunday against Lyon at the Parc. We really want to put on a show for our fans in that match.''

Lyon won three on the trot before this week, including a 4-1 away victory at Marseille, but they could only muster a 1-1 home draw against Nancy on Tuesday night.

To make matters worse for Lyon head coach Remy Garde, Anthony Reveillere and Alexandre Lacazette both suffered injuries in the game and are now doubtful for Sunday's clash.

Third-placed Marseille can pile the pressure on the top two if they win at Toulouse on Saturday.

Marseille, who like PSG lie just three points behind Lyon, have suffered from inconsistent form of late, but they returned to winning ways on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory at Bastia.

Andre-Pierre Gignac, who returned to the team following a foot injury lay-off, is determined not to lose sight of the top two.

"We're not letting PSG go,'' the Marseille striker told "They're a formidable outfit, but we've got the team to trouble them. And we mustn't forget about Lyon, who've had a good first half of the season.''

Another big match this weekend sees fourth-place Lorient travel to the side one place below them, St Etienne, on Sunday, the same day that Bordeaux visit Nancy.

Sochaux could climb out of the relegation zone with a home win over fellow strugglers Brest, while fellow relegation candidates Reims entertain Lille.

Brest manager Landry Chauvin was angry at how his team wilted in their 2-1 home defeat to Montpellier on Wednesday and knows his men must improve for Sochaux's visit.

"We've now got a match on a knife edge at Sochaux on Saturday,'' he said. I hope we'll show other qualities, because if we don't, we're going to suffer a real disappointment. We saw the limits of the squad (against Montpellier), which worries me. We didn't show what we wanted to do, we hid.''

Rennes host Valenciennes on Friday night, while Saturday's schedule sees Montpellier play Bastia, Nice host Evian and Ajaccio travel to Troyes.
