Falcioni out at Boca

Boca Juniors coach Julio Cesar Falcioni has effectively paid the price for his row with Juan Roman Riquelme and has left the club with immediate effect.

Falcioni led Boca to the Apertura title last season and the Copa Argentina.

But the manager failed to recover from his spat with Riquelme, which led to the talismanic midfielder walking out on the club after the final of the Copa Libertadores in July, where they had lost to Corinthians.

A breakdown in the coach's relationship with the fans followed and the team was jeered off the pitch after Saturday's 2-1 home win over Godoy Cruz at La Bombonera.

That was the last match of the Apertura championship and with Falcioni, a former goalkeeper with Boca, out of contract, club president Daniel Angelici chose not to renew his deal.

Boca finished fifth, eight points behind winners Velez Sarsfield, in this season's Apertura.

"I want to tell Boca members and fans that, after a talk I had with Julio Cesar Falcioni, we have decided not to renew his contract, understanding that what happened on Saturday has made both of us reflect it would be very difficult to work under so much pressure," Angelici told a press conference.

"La Bombonera has spoken and we can't be arrogant," Angelici added of himself and the club's board. "We, who do not believe we own the truth or the club, know when to listen to the club's real owners, who are its members."

Riquelme has been without a club since leaving Boca. Upon quitting he stated: "I have nothing left to give the club, I'm empty."
