Bayern Munich handles Augsburg

Bayern Munich continued its march toward the Bundesliga title with a 2-0 victory Saturday in a Bavarian derby at Augsburg.

A Thomas Muller penalty in the 40th minute put Bayern on its way, with Mario Gomez wrapping up the win and taking the Bavarians 11 points clear at the top of the table ahead of Bayer Leverkusen's clash with Hannover on Sunday.

Bottom-placed Augsburg played with courage but was still no match for its local rival.

Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl promised an attacking display and his team did not disappoint either, showing little fear of its illustrious neighbor.

Inspired by Ja-Cheol Koo, the hosts spent as much time in the opposition half as they did in their own rather than doing what many sides do against Bayern and trying to defend.

This allowed Bayern a little more space when they did attack, though, and Muller's shot was blocked by teammate Mario Mandzukic before Philipp Lahm whipped the loose ball wide.

Mandzukic missed the first real chance in the 25th minute when Mohamed Amsif made an instinctive save to deny him from close range.

The visitors took the lead five minutes before halftime when Gibril Sankoh handled the ball inside the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty.

Muller took the responsibility of firing Bayern in front, relieving any anxiety which could have been forming and supplying the halftime lead.

Gomez was introduced for Bayern on the hour mark and, just like on his return to the side after injury two weeks ago, he struck instantly.

Franck Ribery was the provider for the Germany striker, who did not need two invitations to give Bayern a more comfortable lead.

Heynckes started making changes to give some of his players a rest with Augsburg unable to find a route back into the game.

Also Saturday, Vedad Ibisevic's hat trick lifted Stuttgart to sixth in the Bundesliga table and level on points with opponent Schalke following a 3-1 win at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

The Bosnian struck twice in the first half and again in the second period to earn Bruno Labbadia's side three points, with former Stuttgart striker Ciprian Marica on target for the visitors.

American midfielder Jermaine Jones saw a red card for a tackle from behind on Ibrahima Traore as both teams ended the game with 10 men. Stuttgart full back Gotoku Sakai was first to depart in the 67th minute and was followed six minutes later by Jones.

"Sorry for the red card!! But I'm not 100% on the ref side," Jones wrote on Twitter.

Borussia Dortmund's title hopes suffered another blow with a 3-2 defeat at home to Wolfsburg leaving the defending Bundesliga champion 14 points adrift of Bayern Munich.

The game started well enough for Dortmund with Marco Reus supplying the lead in the sixth minute, but a red card for Marcel Schmelzer and penalty from Diego, followed by Naldo's volley, turned the game in Wolfsburg's favor.

Although Jakub Blaszczykowski leveled for Jurgen Klopp's men after an hour, Bas Dost netted the winner for the Wolves, who climbed seven points clear of the relegation zone as a result.

Eintracht Frankfurt took advantage of Schalke's loss to move fourth, level on points with Dortmund, with a 4-1 win over Werder Bremen.

Alexander Meier put Eintracht in front, but Nils Petersen leveled nine minutes after the break.

Two goals in two minutes from Pirmin Schwegler and Stefan Aigner midway through the second half put the hosts back in command, though, and Takashi Inui got a fourth at the death.

Sebastian Polter and Markus Feulner scored the goals that gave Nurnberg three points against Fortuna Dusseldorf in their last game at the Frankenstadion in 2012.

Feulner was in sparkling form for the hosts, setting up Polter for the opening goal in the 27th minute before sealing the win himself in stoppage time at the end of a one-sided 2-0 win.

Freiburg posted a 1-0 win over Greuther Furth with Daniel Caligiuri's 15th-minute strike to leave the Bundesliga debutants rooted to the foot of the table approaching the midway stage of the season.
