Benitez confident of improvement

Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez has claimed the 6-1 win over Nordsjaelland has already had a transformative effect on his squad, and feels such performances will help turn the tide of fan opinion about him.

The new Stamford Bridge boss got the first win of his reign on Wednesday night, comprehensively beating the Danish side in the Champions League.

And Benitez believes Chelsea can now translate that form to the domestic competitions, where the Spaniard has only picked up two points and one goal.

"We were disappointed after the game because we were out of the Champions League, but we were pleased with the performance," he said. "The players are talking about the things we've been doing well, and that has taken a lot of time because there were lots of positives. It has improved our mentality, and the message we wanted to put out about how we want to do things."

Despite the occasional boo and chants for his predecessor Roberto Di Matteo, there seemed to be a more calm and content atmosphere at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Benitez is hopeful that his relationship with the fans will only improve.

"If we carrying on playing at the level we did the other day, I'm sure the fans will be happy," Benitez said.

"Hopefully I will have bigger challenges in the future. I'm really pleased to be here, and the players are really good and their commitment is fantastic. In time, we will understand each other really well and you will see positives on the pitch, like the other day."

Benitez has previously spoken of the need to improve his squad, however, he says he is unsure as to whether the club will see any January reinforcements.

"I was talking with [technical director] Michael [Emenalo] and the people around, and I have my ideas, they have their ideas," he said. "My job now is to improve the squad we have. If we can do something in January that will be good. But if we can't fix the positions we want to strengthen, we'll get on with what we have and look to improve them."
