Chelsea income hit by UCL exit

Chelsea will lose up to £20 million in income compared to last year after they were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages.

• Cech: Players are to blame
• Delaney: Too little too late
• Champions League wrap
• Blog: Common disappointment

The Blues, who had been defending the title, failed to emerge from their group after Juventus got the result they needed away to Shakhtar Donetsk on the final day.

Their Champions League victory against Bayern Munich in Germany brought in £48.6 million in prize money and TV deals, helping the London club to record their first profit since Roman Abramovich took over in 2003.

But the loss of that sort of income this time around makes it tougher for the Blues to comply with UEFA's forthcoming Financial Fair Play regulations, which say clubs should at least break even.

Their demotion to the Europa League will see TV income drop by almost a third, but that will be mitigated to a degree by the extra funds obtained because of a rise of just over 20% in the overall income on offer in this season's Champions League.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, who scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out win against Bayern Munich, has presented his team-mates on that night with rings commemorating their triumph.

The Ivorian, who now plays in China, handed out the gifts at a London dinner - a gesture thought to have cost him around £800,000.
