Torres: I need more time to perform

Fernando Torres has claimed he needs more time to find his feet at Chelsea, even though he is approaching the second anniversary of his record breaking £50m move to Stamford Bridge.

• Delaney: Too little too late
• Blog: Common disappointment

The misfiring Spaniard has become the focus of attention at Chelsea in recent weeks, with owner Roman Abramovich recruiting Rafael Benitez after Roberto Di Matteo struggled to get the best out of the striker.

After scoring twice against Nordsjaelland the Champions League on Wednesday night, Torres hopes his barren run in front of goal has come to an end, but it is his suggestion that he is still struggling to strike up an understanding with his Chelsea team-mates that will alarm new boss Benitez and the club's supporters.

"It's just a matter of time and training and being sure that we understand each other," he told the Daily Mirror. "With [Juan] Mata I have been playing for many years in the national team and last season at Chelsea, but Oscar and Eden [Hazard] have just arrived and we need to train more to improve.

"We have been very good defensively this season, but in the middle we have huge quality and those kinds of players have to be the key for us. We need to play for them and the strikers need to understand what they like to do to score more goals. We need more time."

Despite rumours that he may be off-loaded as part of a deal that will see Falcao arrive at Chelsea, Torres has vowed to see out the remainder of his lucrative Blues contract and is convinced he can claim a glut of trophies at the club.

"I have four more years on my contract, hopefully in these four years I can win many more things than the Champions League and FA Cup, starting with the Club World Cup," he said.

"One of the main reasons to come to Chelsea was that Chelsea are always aiming for trophies. I needed to win trophies because they are what you have after you have finished. In my first full season we won the FA Cup and Champions League, what more can you ask? We have a chance now to win the Club World Cup."

Meanwhile, manager Benitez hopes the end of a goal drought that lasted more than 12 hours for Torres will spark his one-time Liverpool star into life.

"I said before that if we created chances, he would score goals," Benitez said. "He showed his quality [against Nordsjaelland] and he will score more goals."
