Clinical Bayern impress Heynckes

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes praised his side for claiming top spot in their Champions League group despite going a man down against BATE Borisov on Wednesday.

Bayern led 1-0 when Jerome Boateng received his marching orders in the 50th minute, but the Bundesliga leaders refused to sit on their lead and put another three past the Belarusian side to seal a 4-1 win.

"I'm obviously very satisfied because the priority was to win and make sure of first place [in our group]," Heynckes said. "The team were very determined and very alert. We conceded almost nothing in defence. Overall, it was an authoritative display.

"All credit to my team because the Champions League is such a difficult competition - the runners-up are all very strong. That means it's good we're away from home in the first-leg."

Mario Gomez opened the scoring for Bayern in the 21st minute and despite a convincing performance, the striker remains coy on the German side's Champions League challenge.

"We wanted to win the group and we've done it, and done it with a good performance," Gomez said. "The fans were treated to four goals. We'll take it as it comes now.

"We want to go as far as possible, preferrably all the way to the final, but it means we have to beat every team put in front of us. Let's see who we get in the draw."

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer admitted his frustration at conceding a late goal, but believes overturning the 3-1 loss to BATE last month was a motivating factor for Bayern.

"It was a game we had to win, and it was a minor revenge mission because we lost at their place," Neuer said. "We wanted to prove we're the better team, and we've done so. I'm annoyed about conceding a goal, but otherwise we all but shut them out. We've deservedly finished top of the group. We're proud and happy."
