Torres: I joined Chelsea to win trophies

Fernando Torres says his football career is motivated by winning trophies, ahead of Chelsea's crucial Champions League clash with FC Nordsjaelland on Wednesday.

Torres, 28, has been criticised for his poor start to the season, with the Spaniard scoring just four goals in the opening 15 rounds.

But Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez leapt to the defence of Torres, insisting his performances in training indicate an imminent return to form.

The striker achieved Champions League and FA Cup success with Chelsea last season and he admits that was a key factor in his decision to join the Blues from Liverpool.

"One of the main reasons to come to Chelsea was that they are always aiming for trophies," Torres said. "I needed to win trophies because they are what you have after you have finished [your career]. In my first full season, we won the FA Cup and Champions League. What more can you ask? We have a chance now to win the FIFA Club World Cup."

Torres failed to win any silverware during his time at Anfield and he is hoping to continue his winning ways at Chelsea.

"I have four more years on my contract so hopefully I can win many more things - the Premier League would be amazing," he said. "The Capital One Cup and the Community Shield also."
