Fernando Llorente to leave Bilbao

Spain striker Fernando Llorente confirmed Monday he plans to leave Athletic Bilbao when his contract expires at the end of the season.

"Yes, I'm leaving on June 30," he said. "I want to try other things."

The 27-year-old turned down the offer of a new deal and said he wanted to move on over the summer, but the Basque outfit refused to negotiate with potential suitors and hoped to change the player's mind.

"In economic terms, the offer from Athletic could not have been better," said Llorente, who blamed the Spanish media for turning fans against him. "Lies have been told about my meeting with other clubs. The media did not help my contract renewal much."

However, Llorente, who has spent a large chunk of the current La Liga season on the bench due to the issue, said at a Monday press conference that his decision was final.

Information from Press Association was used in this report.
