Szczesny laments poor start to the season

Wojciech Szczesny admits he has not done enough to impress Arsene Wenger this season and is eager to return to the form which made him Arsenal's first choice goalkeeper.

• Blog: Playing without pressure
• Blog: Just a bunch of individuals?

Szczesny, 22, has only played six matches in the Premier League this season after being sidelined with a number of niggling injuries.

But the Poland international will line up for Arsenal in their Champions League clash with Olympiakos on Tuesday hoping to prove he is at full fitness.

"I admit it has been a difficult few months," Szczesny told Arsenal's official website. "I found it hard to adjust playing with little injuries and knocks, especially in the last couple of months of last season.

"But I am pretty much sharper and fitter now, looking forward to getting back to my best and leaving those difficult times behind. I am feeling really sharp in every game, and the manager is sticking with me, which is really good, so I just want to get back to my best as quick as I can because I have not been at my best for the last few months."

Szczesny conceded two goals against Swansea on Saturday, with Arsenal dropping to tenth place after the loss.

It is the Gunners' worst start to a Premier League campaign during Wenger's tenure and Szczesny believes the fans are right to deserve more from his side.

"I am definitely surprised by our position in the league, because when you have the quality of our players, we should be fighting for trophies and we do have one of the best teams in the Premier League," he said.

"Our fans do not deserve to see us 10th in the table, but it is our responsibility to put things right and make sure we get back to where we belong."
