Malta international banned for life

A Malta international has had his ten-year suspension for match-fixing increased to a lifetime ban by UEFA, following a failed appeal.

Kevin Sammut was judged to have attempted to manipulate the outcome of a Euro 2008 qualifier against Norway in June 2007, which Malta lost 4-0 in Oslo.

Sammut, 31, was originally handed a ten-year suspension in August but he chose to appeal the decision. As did UEFA's disciplinary inspector, who requested a life ban to be imposed.

UEFA said in a statement: "Maltese footballer Kevin Sammut has been banned from football-related activity for life for breaching UEFA's principles of integrity and sportsmanship.''

Two other Malta players, Kenneth Scicluna and Stephen Wellman, escaped disciplinary action after UEFA's appeals body "considered that the findings of the disciplinary inspector were insufficient to take disciplinary measures''.

Information from Press Association was used in this report.
