Inter: No Sneijder contract breach

Andrea Stramaccioni has said Inter Milan are not in breach of contract with Wesley Sneijder and denied that the club are bullying the Dutch star.

• Blog: Winless run ended

Sneijder missed the 1-0 Serie A win over Palermo this weekend amid speculation in Italy that his contract could be annulled in January in order to rid the club of his high wages.

Inter president Massimo Moratti last week denied the club were blackmailing Sneijder and trying to make him sign a contract on a substantially lower wage before they considered restoring him to the first team.

It has also been reported that Sneijder will depart the San Siro in January, or even have his contract annulled, if the situation cannot be resolved amicably.

"In the current situation, I am deciding not to call on Sneijder," Stramaccioni said. "He knows that. In other times, my appreciation for him as a player has been unequivocal and our personal rapport is also excellent, so I hope he can return. I must make choices that have nothing to do with his contract.

"[On Monday] there will be a meeting, and I hope it will go well. Everyone must remember that Inter come before everything else. As for 'bullying', I have a law degree and can tell you this situation does not qualify for breach of contract."

Damiano Tommasi, the president of the players' union in Italy, said he was happy with how the situation had developed and claimed everything would be sorted out soon.

"The situation will be resolved, the player has a contract for another two years," Tommasi told Radio Anch'io Sport. "This is not the first time someone is left out as a technical choice, so we must be careful not to talk about anything else. Sneijder is acting like a professional, so I think everything will fall into place.

"Clubs need to know to decide on the duration of contracts - Sneijder has already signed a renewal after the Financial Fair Play had been approved. It makes me smile when I hear that players need to understand the country is in a difficult time: they only sign contracts that are offered by the clubs."

Sneijder's stand-off with Inter bears a striking resemblance to the situation that saw Goran Pandev move from Lazio to the Nerazzurri in 2010.

Lazio, then Pandev's employers, were ordered to release the striker from his contract by the Lega Calcio and he moved clubs for free.

Meanwhile, Stramaccioni was delighted to see Inter claim three points against Palermo, saying: "At a time like this, when we are not at our best, I liked the attitude of the team and the consistent performance.

"We played as well as we could right now, allowing Palermo only long-range efforts, and that is an important sign."
