Baggies set to spend in January window

West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke will be given money to spend in the January transfer window as he looks to build on the Midlanders' fine first half of the season.

Clarke has guided the Baggies to fifth place in the top flight but his options will be diminished in January, with striker Peter Odemwingie and midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu likely to go to the African Nations Cup with Nigeria and Congo.

Clarke and West Brom sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth have held talks about the possibility of bringing in reinforcements, and the manager explained: "When we get closer to the end of the month, we'll start to make decisions.

"We have spoken about what we might need to do in January. If the chairman [Jeremy Peace], Dan and I decide we need to strengthen the squad, we can do that. Is there money there? Yes, I think there is."

Clarke's high-fliers have suffered a recent wobble, being beaten at Swansea in midweek before a much-changed line-up lost at home to Stoke on Saturday.

But he said: "I can't keep saying I've got a good squad then pick the same players every week.

"Then I become a liar. I can't tell the players I trust them all the same and then not do that."
