Malaga facing sanctions

Malaga are facing UEFA sanctions over their failure to meet repayments on outstanding debts.

The Qatari-owned Spanish side are one of nine clubs that are set to receive further punishment as UEFA clamps down on clubs that do not meet its financial requirements.

European football's governing body confirmed they have lifted the suspension of prize money for 16 of the 23 clubs originally included in September after they cleared debts

Malaga failed to make the deadline though, and have now been referred to UEFA's adjudicatory chamber. There are a number of possible sanctions, including disqualification from current competitions.

A spokesman for Malaga claimed the club were in the process of trying to clear their debts "as soon as possible" with the intention of remedying the situation soon.

On Thursday club captain Duda confirmed that the players were being kept up-to-date on the club's affairs and had every confidence in the owners resolving the issues.

The other clubs facing possible action are Hajduk Split and Osijek of Croatia, Rapid and Dinamo Bucharest of Romania and Partizan Belgrade and Vojvodina of Serbia.

Poland's Lech Poznan and Arsenal Kiev of Ukraine also face sanctions. They were not among the first batch of clubs originally targeted but subsequent overdue payments situation deteriorated between the dates of June and September 2012 leading to a new referral.

Malaga have already reached the last 16 of the Champions League in their debut season in the competition, and will qualify as winners of Group C with a point against Anderlecht on Tuesday.
