Dempsey: Fulham under-appreciated me

Clint Dempsey has said he left Fulham because he did not feel sufficiently appreciated by the club.

• Blog: No motivation needed for Spurs

US international Dempsey, 29, signed for Spurs on transfer deadline day after a summer of persistent speculation had linked him with a £10 million move to Liverpool.

When that move failed to materialise, Cottagers manager Martin Jol omitted the attacker from his early season squads as uncertainty over his future continued.

On Saturday, Dempsey returns to Craven Cottage - where he spent five and a half years - for the first time since his £6 million switch to north London.

He said: "If you always felt valued and appreciated enough, I don't think you'd ever leave, but it came to a point for me where I didn't feel valued and appreciated - not by the fans, but by other situations. That's just the way things went."

And he added that he hoped the Fulham fans would remember him for his goalscoring exploits, rather than the manner in which he left the club, on Saturday.

"Any time I go back, there will always be good memories," he said. "It's unfortunate how things happened in the end, but you look forward to going back.

"But no matter what, I'll always look back with good memories and be grateful for the club and the fans for the way they took care of me."

He said both the Fulham fanbase and chairman Mohamed Fayed "were great to me", but added: "It got to the point where I wanted to keep going and try to further my career."

Tottenham's Mousa Dembele will also be returning to Craven Cottage for the first time since leaving for Spurs in the summer, while Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov and boss Jol were once both big favourites with the White Hart Lane crowd.
