Fontana wins appeal against match-fix ban

Alberto Fontana has had his ban for match fixing overturned by a tribunal at Italy's Sports Arbitration Court (TNA) and is free to return to action immediately.

The Novara goalkeeper was handed a three-and-a-half-year ban for his role in a 3-0 Coppa Italia loss to Chievo in November 2010, with the verdict then upheld by the Federal Court.

However, the TNA heard his appeal on Wednesday and overturned the decision. Fontana has now had his punishment wiped and the 37-year-old - who had always protested his innocence - was clearly relieved as he spoke to reporters outside court.

"Just thinking about it makes me shiver, I was dragged into this situation without knowing why," he said. "There was a lot of confusion in this trial and I ended up in the meat grinder, paying for it with five months out of football."
