Giggs hails Keane, Scholes and Ronaldo

Ryan Giggs has said Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo would make up his ideal midfield from the Premier League era.

The Manchester United winger, who celebrates his 39th birthday on Thursday, looked back on his lengthy career.

He said Anfield had been the most intimidating ground to visit and named former Arsenal right-back Lee Dixon as his toughest opponent.

But he had to omit David Beckham from his ideal Premier League midfield when asked which trio he would like to line up alongside.

"I think the two midfielders that stand out are Scholesy and Keaney, the year we won the treble [1999]," he told premierleague.com. "And then it would be close between Becks and Cristiano, but what Cristiano has done in the last couple of years probably just pips him.

"In my view, along with [Lionel] Messi, he's the world's best player. So, I wouldn't mind being in that midfield, if I can get in."

Giggs, the only player to appear in all 21 Premier League seasons, also picked September 2009's Manchester derby, when United beat City 4-3 with a 97th-minute goal from Michael Owen, as the best game in the division's history.

"I set up a few goals, and - the way the game went, obviously passing to Michael [Owen] to score the winner - that was a great game."

The Welsh winger selected another derby winner, Wayne Rooney's overhead kick in February 2011, along with Beckham's strike from his own half against Wimbledon in 1996 as his favourite goals.

Arguably Giggs' greatest goal came against Arsenal in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final, but he still nominated a former Gunner as his hardest defender to beat.

"I think Lee Dixon was always tough to play against, especially at Highbury where it was a tight pitch and it was that famous back four and [David] Seaman [in goal], he said.

"It was always tough to find that bit of space, which normally I can find, but he had that experience, knowing whether to go tight or whether to come off, and it was always a test to play against him."
