Farina appointed Sydney FC coach

Former Socceroos player and coach Frank Farina is set to make his return to Australian football after being named as Sydney FC's new coach.

Farina was officially named as Sydney's replacement for Ian crook on Wednesday after Crook resigned from the top job two weeks ago.

Steve Corica took on the role of caretaker coach during Sydney's last outing against Adelaide, but Farina, who is currently based in Papua New Guinea, is expected to take the reigns when the Sky Blues face Melbourne Heart on Saturday.

"On behalf of the Sydney FC board I would like to welcome Frank Farina to Sydney FC," club chairman Scott Barlow said in a statement. "Frank has coached at the highest level and has dealt with the demands of coaching a high profile team.

"He also brings with him a wealth of A-League coaching experience that will serve him well as he joins us part way through our season. We believe Frank has the experience, leadership and coaching acumen to have a positive and immediate impact on Sydney FC."

Farina will take on one of the most demanding roles in Australian sport at present, with Sydney sitting bottom of the A-League ladder after eight rounds.

It is a challenge that the 48-year-old is eager to take on, saying he believes Sydney will soon get their season on track.

"This is a fantastic opportunity," Farina said in the statement. "There is a lot of attention on Sydney FC and I'm looking forward to getting to Sydney and working with the players and staff to create an environment where we can be successful on the pitch.

"There are some very good players at the club, some of which I've worked with previously, and I've got no doubt that with hard work we can turn things around and get Sydney FC heading in the right direction."

It is believed Farina has agreed to terms for the remainder of the season, with an option to extend the contract.
