Rizzoli defends decision

The referee who awarded AC Milan the penalty from which they scored the only goal of their 1-0 win over Juventus has defended himself against questions over his decision, saying that television "alters perceptions".

In an extended interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport match official Nicola Rizzoli dismissed replays, claiming they are not a true reflection of events.

Rizzoli awarded the spot-kick after he adjudged Antonio Nocerino's header to have struck the arm of Juve midfielder Mauricio Isla.

He said: "There are two parallel truths in football: that which happens on the pitch, with its speed, its sounds and all of the rest. Then there is television which decomposes the images, slows them down and alters them. It frequently is not able to give certainties as happened on the replays of Isla.

"Are we sure that the ball doesn't ever touch his arm notwithstanding the downward trajectory?

"On the pitch, you had to call it. The televised reality alters perceptions and not even all of these are certain..."

Rizzoli also praised the behaviour the Juventus players for the way they handled the decision and the subsequent defeat, their second in a month after previously going 49 league matches unbeaten.

He added: "The protests were very civil and this allowed me to continue to call the game with the utmost concentration."
