Cabaye ruled out until February

Newcastle have been dealt a fresh injury blow after manager Alan Pardew confirmed the news that Steven Taylor and Yohan Cabaye have been ruled out until February.

Taylor, 26, injured his hamstring during Newcastle's defeat to Southampton on Sunday with the early prognosis ruling him out of contention for at least six weeks - further stretching Pardew's small squad.

His absence from the first-team picture leaves the Magpies with just two natural centre backs in Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini - the latter of whom will return from suspension against Stoke City on Wednesday.

The news of Taylor's injury follows confirmation from Yohan Cabaye on Monday that he has undergone surgery for an issue with his abdominal wall.

Speaking about his injury via a statement on his official website, Cabaye said: "A recurring pain (forced) me to get operated on my abdominal wall. There will be two steps in the surgery."

"The first on November 26, the second will happen the day after. I will let you know about my recovery as often as possible. I'll do my best to get back on my feet as soon as possible."

With Alan Pardew recently admitting that he is currently undergoing his most testing time as Newcastle manager, it remains to be seen whether Mike Ashley will sanction any transfers in January in a bid to add depth to the club's squad - with a host of names already being linked to Tyneside in the New Year, including Nemanja Gudelj.

The Serbian midfielder is currently playing in the Eredivisie with NAC Breda, but has attracted interest from Villarreal and Newcastle according to Voetball International - with the club's technical director Jeffery van As confirming the club has not yet received a bid for the player.

It is believed the club will want €2 million for Gudelj - who has 15 caps for Serbia's U21s.
