Gomez thanks Martinez after 'perfect' hat-trick

Wigan Athletic midfielder Jordi Gomez has celebrated the first hat-trick of his professional career with a thank you to Roberto Martinez for sticking by him.

• Blog: Style, goals, or both?

Gomez's stoppage-time winner to beat Reading 3-2 at the DW Stadium on Saturday was a 'perfect hat-trick' - comprising finishes with his right foot, left foot and his head.

The 27-year-old has struggled for consistency since arriving at Wigan from Espanyol in the summer of 2009, but manager Martinez has always supported him.

And Gomez has responded by becoming only the second Spaniard to hit a Premier League hat-trick, with the first being Chelsea forward Fernando Torres during his Liverpool days.

The Wigan midfielder praised Martinez for backing him during the times when his form has wavered. "He's always been really helpful and brilliant with me since I've known him," Gomez told the Wigan Evening Post.

"There isn't one bad word you can say about him. He has always supported me and made me feel good at the club and so I'm very grateful to him."

Gomez was also thrilled to be in the Premier League hat-trick club with Torres, who struck his first for Liverpool against Middlesbrough in February 2008.

"It's good to know Torres and me are the only Spanish players to have scored hat-tricks in the Premier League and I hope there are more to come," said Gomez.

"Everyone has signed the match ball and I will keep it somewhere safe at home.

"My last hat-trick was when I was a kid. I was 11 or 12 and was at Barcelona so it's been a long time, but I'm very happy to score a hat-trick and the team won.

"We got the result we wanted and it can't be better."

Gomez has found it difficult to win over all of Wigan's fans, and was jeered by a small section of the home crowd after a couple of loose touches during the early stages of Saturday's game.

"I'm used to it and it makes me stronger than ever," he said.

"I can't say anything to them because they are free to say what they think."
