Oviedo rues Everton's late lapses

Bryan Oviedo has warned that Everton must kick their habit of conceding late goals if they want to make the Champions League.

• Jolly: Canaries chriping up
• Blog: Same indifferent script

David Moyes' side conceded a 90th-minute equaliser for the third time this season as Sebastien Bassong snatched a point for Norwich in the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Newcastle striker Demba Ba and Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell have also struck late on in Premier League games to deny Everton victory this season.

As a result, Moyes' team have lost six vital points that would have put them in third place. Instead, they lie fifth.

Costa Rican midfielder Oviedo, a summer signing from FC Copenhagen, has stressed the need for Everton to maintain their focus to see out matches after the frustration of failing to beat Norwich.

The 22-year-old told the Liverpool Echo: "The goal was very disappointing. It made it difficult for us. We need to look at it and see what happened because we can't afford to keep conceding late goals.

"We've conceded too many in the last five minutes. Yeah, we've got injuries but that's not an excuse; we just need to work harder because we want Champions League.

"We have the team for Champions League football. We have good players but we need to start concentrating better and defend much better from free-kicks and corners."

Everton missed a number of chances to finish off Norwich after Steven Naismith's early opener, with Nikica Jelavic wasteful in front of goal.

But Oviedo added: "The responsibility shouldn't be just with Jelavic. The whole team should be scoring goals.

"Everyone has missed good chances. He is a very good player and he's important for us. I looked at Jelavic before I signed and knew what a fantastic player he is. We need to help him and be better in midfield and defence too.

"Everton are one of the top teams in the country and we need to start showing it again."
