Roma fans arrested over Spurs attack

There have been further developments in the attack on Tottenham fans in Rome as the only two hooligans to have been arrested were revealed to be supporters of Roma rather than Lazio.

• Blog: Lloris is Spurs' No. 1

A large group descended on the 'Drunken Ship' bar in Campo de Fiori wearing motorcycle helmets to hide their identity and injured seven English fansthe night before Spurs' game against Lazio, hospitalising one with a stab wound to his head.

He is now out of danger and slowly recovering while police investigating the incident have detained a further six men and are looking closely at a further 14 names. It was originally believed the group were Lazio fans targeting Spurs supporters ahead of Thursday's Europa League fixture but it appears that was not the case.

Police announced they are charging Francesco Ianari (aged 26) and Mauro Pinnelli (27) - both known to be Roma Ultra - with attempted murder, seemingly indicating the attack had no connection to the game. Press reports in Italy suggest the gang was a group made up of the various Far Right groups in the city, attacking Tottenham fans because of their long association with the Jewish community in London.

A march is to be held on Friday by similar groups from across Italy in Rome and would further explain the presence of so many extremists willing to be involved in such an incident.

A number of eye witnesses have claimed to hear anti-Semitic insults during the incident and also the leaders of Lazio's Curva Nord groups have issued assurances it was not planned by any of their number.

Lazio themselves issued a lengthy statement before the game which said there was "absolutely no foundation" behind reports the attack was connected to them in any way, while president Claudio Lotito was more concise, telling reporters: "The Lazio fans have nothing to do with what happened at Camp de Fiori!"

There are still issues for the club to address, however, as further anti-Semitic chants were heard during the Stadio Olimpico encounter. Lazio have already been punished by UEFA this season following racist chanting at White Hart Lane and can expect to be hit with a fine for songs during Thursday's 0-0 draw.
