McDermott hails Reading owner

Reading manager Brian McDermott has insisted he has a good relationship with owner Anton Zingarevich, despite recent rumours that the Russian was set to wield the axe.

• Blog: Case for permanent partnership

Zingarevich, a Zenit St Petersburg fan, was reportedly lining up former Zenit boss Dick Advocaat as McDermott's replacement.

However, the Reading chief denied the speculation earlier this week, stating that he is fully behind his current manager.

Although McDermott says he does not need to hear the comments publicly from Zingarevich, he is thankful to the owner for clarifying his position.

"I get on really well with Anton and I know him well enough, he didn't need to come out and say anything, that was up to him to say whatever he had to say,'' he said.

"I've known him since January and we have been very consistent with each other and have a good relationship.

"It wasn't particularly important to me and I don't think it was particularly important for him to say it - but I appreciate the fact he did say it.''

Meanwhile, McDermott has welcomed goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and midfielders Jimmy Kebe and Jem Karacan back to training this week, with Danny Guthrie set to return over the weekend.
