Injured Egan returns to Sunderland

Sunderland defender John Egan has returned to the club after suffering a suspected broken leg on loan at Bradford City.

The former Crystal Palace and Sheffield United loanee was stretchered off in the 18th minute of Bradford's game against Plymouth Argyle on

Tuesday, with a suspected broken fibula after falling awkwardly following a headed clearance.

The injury will spell the end of the Irish Under 21 internationals loan spell with the Bantams, which after a bright start saw him play every minute of the previous three league games - a period in which the club conceded only goal.

Yet to play for Sunderland's first team, the 20-year-old remains highly rated by Martin O'Neill and his staff at the Stadium Of Light after joining the club from Cork City in 2009 - with Development Squad manager Kevin Ball last week providing him with a glowing appraisal.

"John has got an outstanding attitude and is desperate to be a successful footballer," Ball said.

"It's great to deal with a young lad who really wants to be a footballer, really wants to make the most of his game."

"He went to Bradford with the approval of everyone here because he is at that stage of his career where he needs league football."
