Critics question Bayern performances

Bayern Munich have come under fire for their recent performances - despite their healthy lead in the Bundesliga and qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

In the space of four days, the Bavarians have twice been held to 1-1 draws by ten-man opposition, against Nurnberg in the league and Valencia in Europe.

Speaking after the Valencia game, Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge called on his players to "step on the gas".

"Dangerous days," kicker wrote, arguing that Bayern's game was "too sterile, predictable and emotionless".

Despite playing against ten men for over an hour in Spain, the Bundesliga leaders had difficulty getting a grip on the game.

"Nothing less than 100 percent will do in the Champions League," Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes said, while Thomas Muller, who scored the late equaliser, added: "It's about how we play. We got off lightly".

Bayern face Hannover at home and Freiburg away before a crunch game against in-form Borussia Dortmund. "The upcoming week is very important for our future," Rummenigge said. "We must give all we can to prevent what happened last year [when Bayern lost an eight-point lead to Dortmund]."

There is also speculation about the future of coach Jupp Heynckes, who is in the last year of his contract and has so far left his options open.

But speaking on Wednesday, midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger praised Heynckes, saying: "He is the boss. He voices criticism when needed. We can achieve a lot with this team, and he dictates the rhythm. Normally, we'd only have to do what he wants and we will play a successful season."
