Gera happy to fight for Albion place

Zoltan Gera has accepted that he will continue to be one of the occasional fall guys in Steve Clarke's rotation policy at West Bromwich Albion.

Gera, 33, in his second spell at the Hawthorns, scored the opening goal of what has been a superb season for the club so far when he struck against Liverpool.

The Hungary international has since also netted against Queens Park Rangers but has been in and out of Clarke's side at a time when the head coach has plenty of options in midfield and up front.

But he said: "I'm happy. I'm playing well, so if the manager sees I can help the team, he will pick me. It's no problem at all. We have a good squad with lots of good players.

"Of course, as a player, I always want to play, but I know we have other players who are as good as the ones in the team. So when I have a chance, I want to play well to keep my place in the team."

Gera has James Morrison, Chris Brunt, Graham Dorrans and Peter Odemwingie as competition for places in attacking midfield roles.

He has started seven of the 12 Premier League games so far and come on as substitute in two others and, despite his continued popularity with supporters and the fall from favour of Jerome Thomas, knows he is not guaranteed a place for Saturday's game at Sunderland.

"After the first game of the season, when I scored against Liverpool, I didn't play the next two or three games," he said. "But I said: 'It is no problem' because I trust in the gaffer to know what is best for the team.

"You always need to fight for your place now - there is no question about that."
