WSW's Covic to face former club Victory

Western Sydney gloveman Ante Covic says he has nothing to prove when he faces his former A-League club Melbourne Victory at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday.

Covic who was a standout for the Victory last season, earning their player of the year award, was let go after his contract expired.

But Victory's loss has very much been the Wanderers' gain with Covic only conceding five goals in the first seven rounds, second only to table-toppers Adelaide who have let four through.

His skills were on display against Perth last Sunday as he made several key saves to keep a clean sheet in league newcomers Western Sydney's upset 1-0 win, which lifted them to fifth on the table.

And while Covic admits he wants to get one up on his former club, he insists he isn't out to prove anything to them.

"It's always nice to come up against a team you played for... and I'd love to have the upper hand against Victory," he said.

"It's almost like playing against your siblings, you can put it that way - you just want that upper hand.

"But I've got nothing to prove to Melbourne Victory.

"They made a decision not to keep me on and that's their decision.

"I've moved to a club that I'm really happy with."

The Glory produced wave after wave of attack last weekend, but couldn't get past the Wanderers strong backline of skipper Michael Beauchamp, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Covic.

But Covic knows that coming up against one of the league's strongest attacks just as they're clicking into gear under coach Ange Postecoglou presents a big challenge.

And he doesn't think his experience at the Victory gives him any advantage.

"We all know the capabilities of someone like an Archie Thompson up front who can create something out of nothing," he said.

"But a new coach has come in who's changed their style of play and there's different players in the squad.

"So I won't be resting on my laurels."

Meanwhile, Japanese star Shinji Ono is in doubt for Saturday's match.

The key playmaker did not train with the squad on Wednesday due to illness but coach Tony Popovic was hopeful he'd be fit for the Parramatta Stadium clash.

"He rang up this morning and I think he's got the flu or something, so we'll get him to the doctor today and see how he is," Popovic said.

"Hopefully, he'll be ok tomorrow or Friday."

Losing Ono would be a big blow to a team already without Youssouf Hersi, as the impressive Dutch midfielder serves a two-game suspension following his red card in Perth.

The Wanderers sit just above the Victory on the ladder, but with only goal difference separating the two teams, Melbourne have the chance to leapfrog them.

A win for the Wanderers could lift them up to third place.
